In recent years we have developed the manufacture of Carbide Taps. This was as a result of the demands from customers for ever-increasing efficiencies, primarily for the tapping of cast irons and aluminiums. However, we have also successfully threaded steel heat treated to 63 HRc.

Richard Lloyd Limited has a longstanding alliance with a number of Carbide suppliers one of which is Howle Carbides Limited. This alliance allows us to formulate the grades of carbide to suit our needs for distinct tap characteristic requirements.

Production figures, in excess of 40 times the life of coated high speed steel, have been experienced at a cost comparison of 10 times.  However, the use of carbide taps requires strict control of the tapping conditions, and performance figures will vary, dependent upon such features as rigidity, machine condition, and pre-tapped hole condition.
